The role of a Picture Editor can be largely varied and incorporates a a few different daily tasks. It requires both technical skill and inventive ability. An image Editor will typically be responsible for all or any from the following tasks:
Commissioning Photography: A Picture Editor can setup photoshoots ranging from big budget studio shoots which include props, hair making up, stylists, photographers, lighting etc through to extremely swift shoots requiring maybe only a photographer. Due to this, a contacts book filled with geographically and stylistically diverse photographers, make-up artists, stylists, prop houses etc is invaluable.
Writing/Devising Creative Briefs: An essential skill for a Picture Editor and probably at the core of the role has been in a position to come up with fresh ideas for photography. Once a concept is arrived at, the Picture Editor must be in a position to communicate it effectively so that all relevant parties understands it. Normally, this is achieved by discussing an idea (often generating refinements) but additionally by writing an innovative brief. This can include descriptions and illustrations of the idea
Direction: A Picture Editor will often direct shoots to make sure that the lighting/position of subjects etc will best realise the idea
Images Processing: This often forms a large part of the workload of the Picture Editor. Using industry standard applications such as Photoshop cs4 or Bridge, an image Editor will process images for use. This can be re-touching an image (also referred to as "air-brushing") where blemishes along with other inconsistencies in an image will be removed along with other areas might be enhanced or completely recreated. Captioning forms an important part of image processing and it is common practice to embed captions in the image file. This is accomplished using Photoshop/Bridge deciding on the "File Info" option in the "File" menu. An image Editor will then add captions, copyright information and anything else highly relevant to the image.
