It's common for people to recommend vinegar and tea tree footbaths for toenail fungus. Being at the receiving end of lots of such advice, I understand that only too well. And I don't want to discount all of it outright, so before I say to you why tea tree oil and vinegar do not work as remedies for toenail fungus, I feel I should let you know exactly what they're designed to do, starting with...

toenail fungus

Can Tea tree oil really treat toenail fungus?

You will find plenty of stories about why tea tree oil is among those fool-proof toenail fungus treatments. It's a very popular natural fix for nail fungus, particularly among those who would like to avoid prescription drugs for his or her possible side effects.

Bottled tea tree oil accustomed to treat toenail fungus originates from the Australian tea tree, whose Latin name is melaleuca alternifolia. It's long been discussed just as one source of antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral remedies, and there is some evidence to suggest that it could indeed possess certain properties that make it an appropriate treatment for nail fungus. Yet, there is nothing yet to suggest that tea tree oil will become a scientifically and medically accepted prescription medication anytime soon.

But how exactly does tea tree oil act as a nail fungus infection remedy? Well, whether it has been especially prepared as a fix for toe nail fungus, tea tree oil will probably be just one from the ingredients in the potion, being blended with other essential oils that are also supposed to treat toenail fungus. Among other oils/liniments used to supplement tea tree oil are dimethylsulfoxide, Vaseline, Vicks Vaporub, and iodine. However, no scientific studies have, till date, proven their special powers as remedies for nail fungus.

Because tea tree oil possesses anti-fungal and antiseptic properties, it's believed that you'll obtain satisfactory results by directly putting it on to the affected region. It is also supposed to be good at treating other fungal infections like dandruff and ring worm but personally speaking, I've come across little evidence of tea tree oil's ability to treat nail fungus.

Is vinegar the toenail fungus remedy it is claimed to become?

And now, what of vinegar? Well, the supposed efficacy of vinegar is basically according to its acidic properties, which hampers the development of toenail fungus. Therefore, the concept is when are applying vinegar daily, you will eventually restrict the development of the fungus enough where it will vanish and leave you with clean, freshly grown toenails.

Apparently, ordinary white wine vinegar will do the trick if you take a footbath inside it for long enough - about a year - but you have to keep going with it every single day, for 30 minutes a minimum of every day. You may even directly use the vinegar two or three times a day or wear a vinegar-soaked bandage. Some folks also recommend apple cider vinegar treatment like a fix for toenail fungus, to be taken internally. The most popular dosage is two tablespoons thrice daily, but don't forget, this is acetic acid we are referring to, therefore it damages your tooth enamel if you do not rinse your mouth after taking it.
