Those invoved with web design have been following a same rules for years - they often consume a set formula with regards to putting together a website since this is how their audiences, and for that reason their customers, expect the site to look. You shouldn't try to break these design rules, as this won't always operate in your favour, but there's no problem with attempting to reinvent them just a little.

Iowa City Website Design

Logos they fit in upper left-hand corners having a home link

Whilst this design rule gives visitors a good way to 'reset' the web site if they become hopelessly lost, it is a little overdone. An abundant navigation bar could work equally well.

Templates are made before the content written

As the aesthetics of a website design generally form a visitor's first impression of a website, the content can also be used to do this. You should use typography and colour to really tie the two together.

Article titles, images and 'read more' line is clickable

Visitors generally need an obvious cue to understand that they'll click for more information. You could try, however, making the entire teaser clickable or putting the clickable section beneath.

The other website design rules do you follow inside your day-to-day work you could probably reinvent for some stunning results? It is important to keep in mind that reinventing rules is about trial and error - whilst a navigation bar perform perfectly for just one client, that doesn't mean the traditional linked logo won't work for others.
