Some Tips For New Dog Owners On How To Train
Some dogs can be more trouble to train than other dogs. For example it's good to start training puppies young but they are more energetic or hyper than older dogs. Dogs that are older may already have learned bad habits. However a person can still learn ways to train any dog in this article.
One of the first things most people teach their dogs is the sit command. This is very basic but is handy for your dog to know, especially when you want to get his attention. One way to teach your dog to sit is to take a piece of dog treat and hold it about six inches from his nose. Slowly raise the treat straight up and say "Fido, sit". You may have to use your hand to help him into the position until he realizes what you want.
Never use human shampoo on a dog. While it may be tempting to have your dog smelling like your favorite shampoo, most hair products for humans are far too harsh for a dog's sensitive skin. If you are in a pinch and must use a human shampoo, try to use one formulated to be gentle enough for a baby.
Stop bad behavior before it starts by setting up your dog's environment to discourage bad behavior. This may mean crate-training dogs that have issues with going to the bathroom outside, or limiting access to certain rooms for dogs with destructive tendencies. No matter what route you take, your dog will be safer if his environment is suited to his quirks.
When training your dog, try to use positive reinforcement. Instead of harshly scolding the animal when it does something wrong, reward it with a small treat when it behaves how you want it to. Soon enough, your puppy will learn to only do the behaviors that earn treats, becoming perfectly trained in no time.
As a new dog owner, you are faced with many challenges. Hopefully if you follow the steps presented in this article, you will be much closer to being able to successfully train your new dog and have a better understanding of what goes into dog ownership and training.
