An adolescent once asked, "Is anime a sin? 'Cause I'm trying to love God more. I understand war is really a sin, but let's say you're going for that good guys. Or let's say it's just a normal anime?"
Here's my point. Literally, watching anime is not a sin. Yeah, right. In fact, I'm writing a magazine about this wherein I discuss the problem more specifically. Watching anime is just like you're watching an indie film, or Discovery Channel, wherein you get some good information and at the same time you are being entertained. If I'm going to directly answer the question "Is watching anime a sin?" then your response is no. However, there are lots of things to consider with regards to anime. There are several "but's" about this matter. In a more literal sense, anime itself is not really a sin but the way you handle your emotion as you're watching anime is another thing. That's one of the numerous cases. Because there are many.
People, especially teenagers, who are connected with Japanese animation consider this merely like a form of entertainment. I don't argue about this anyway, becasue it is the very fact. However, everyone must consider that if watching anime replaces your responsibilities and peace and quiet with God, then you're totally guilty in the eyes from the LORD. Watching anime turns into a sin when you spend time on it a lot more than spent time with God. Uh-oh. I don't want to sound like a preacher here, but, I have to include a verse that supports my claim.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so you might be careful to complete based on everything is written in it. For then you'll make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Joshua 1:8 ESV)
It's God's command that people should meditate on His word. Not just that, it says day and night. If we read the scriptures we will be aware of principles of God and the stuff that pleases Him, such as the stuff that displeases Him. God isn't pleased when His youngsters are so busy doing other things for selfish reasons, much more fact He ought to be prioritized above anything else.
In this case, if you are watching anime and spending additional time onto it, then let me inquire an issue: are you spending a basic time with God? Can you compare your prayer time from just how long you're watching anime stuffs?
If you wish to love God more then you need to become more concern of methods to grow your relationship using the Father. We ought to not try to like God. But we ought to love God with all of our heart, with all our mind, and with all our soul. That's the greatest commandment of the LORD!
I was once an anime lover before, and honestly, I cosplayed, too. Which is a viewpoint of a former cosplayer who abandoned the animeland in the quest for following Christ...
If watching anime is your priority in life, should you take more time on it than other things, then I let you know for certain, yes, it is a sin. And you're simply accountable of it in the Judgment Day.
