A teenager once asked, "Is anime a sin? 'Cause I'm trying to love God more. I know war is a sin, but let's say you are going for the good guys. Or what if it's just a normal anime?"
Here's my point. Literally, watching anime isn't a sin. Yeah, right. Actually, I'm writing a book about it wherein I discuss the matter specifically. Watching anime is like you're watching an indie film, or Discovery Channel, wherein you get some good information and also at the same time you are being entertained. If I will directly answer the question "Is watching anime a sin?" then your response is no. However, there are many points to consider with regards to anime. There are several "but's" about this matter. In a more literal sense, anime itself is not really a sin but the way you handle your emotion while watching anime is another thing. That is just one of the numerous cases. Because there are many.
People, especially teenagers, who are connected with Japanese animation think about this merely as a form of entertainment. I don't argue about that anyway, since it's the fact. However, everyone must take into account that if watching anime replaces the position and peace and quiet with God, then you're totally guilty in the eyes of the LORD. Watching anime turns into a sin when you spend some time onto it a lot more than you spend time with God. Uh-oh. I don't want to sound like a preacher here, but, I must incorporate a verse that supports my claim.
This Book from the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate onto it night and day, so that you might be careful to do based on everything is designed in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you may have good success. (Joshua 1:8 ESV)
It's God's command that people should meditate on His word. Not just that, it says night and day. If we browse the scriptures we will know the principles of God and the stuff that pleases Him, such as the stuff that displeases Him. God is not pleased when His children are so busy doing other things for selfish reasons, much more fact He should be prioritized above other things.
In this instance, if you are watching anime and spending more time on it, then let me ask you an issue: are you currently spending a quiet time with God? Are you able to compare your prayer time from how long you're watching anime stuffs?
If you wish to love God more then you should become more concern of how to grow your relationship with the Father. We ought to not try to like God. But we should love God with all our heart, with all of our mind, with all of our soul. That is the greatest commandment from the LORD!
I was once an anime lover before, and honestly, I cosplayed, too. And this is an impression of a former cosplayer who abandoned the animeland in the quest for following Christ...
If watching anime is the priority in life, if you take more time on it than other things, then I tell you for several, it is indeed a sin. And you're simply accountable of it in the Judgment Day.
